If your lawn has bare patches, spot seeding can help. Even if you tried this in the past, don’t lose hope.
What is the source of those bare spots? It’s important to find out what’s causing bare spots. A patch next to your driveway, an area under a tree, a high traffic path, or a spot often visited by the dog. Some bare areas may never become lush – trees compete with lawns for water/nutrients, a high traffic area might benefit with a pathway of decorative paving stones instead of grass. 
Seeding lawns is best done in temperatures that remain above 10 degrees celsius during the evening, this usually means in mid May.
Follow these steps and remember the keys to success remain the same – start with quality seed, are the bare areas in the sun or shade? Buy the correct seed mix, (sun seed mix will grow in partly shaded areas, shade seed mix will not be sustainable in sunny areas). Rake the ground and remove the dead grass and weeds to ensure that the seed makes good contact with the ground and keep it moist. There is no need to cover the seed with soil.

Don’t forget to feed your lawn! As we need nutrients so does your lawn, adding a slow release, organic based fertilizer 2-3 times / year (spring, summer, fall) increases the grass root system requiring less water, providing a denser lawn to crowd out weeds.
